Basingstoke Canal Guide - Deepcut Flight
Locks 22 to 18
Lock 22
| Approaching Lock no.22 and still in the beautiful heath land. The mainline train to London Waterloo abuts the canal on the right. | |
| Lock 22 has plenty of mooring posts and bollard for using the lock. | |
| I found this a little strange. In the pond between 22 and 23 there appears to be 2 sets of concrete steps from the bank into the canal. Also a horizontal mooring bar. | |
| Looking down stream out of lock 22, still in the heath land. To the right in the train line and to the left is the woods. |
Lock 21
| The short approach to Lock 21 which is the last of the filled ponds due to a break at Lock 20. | |
| Looking down on the sorry site of an empty canal. This stretch of the canal must be one of the prettiest in the country. | |
| The empty lock 21 still has water pouring through the lock chamber. Although the lock has been empty for a few weeks |
Lock 20
| Onwards and down to the lock which is causing all the problem. The channel wall has fallen away on the lower side | |
| Close up of the approach to Lock 20 | |
| Long view of the exit of Lock 20, showing the gates open and the lower pond empty. | |
| A close up view of the broken lock. Its strange seeing the canal without any water in it!. | |
| As the canal drops down in heights you can see the train line up high on the embankment, | |
| Onwards to lock 19 with the canal still in a dry state. |
Lock 19
| Leaving lock 20, the canal bears round to the left and you can see the train embankment on the right hand side climbing up. The boy on the bike is my son Adam, who helped me take the photographs. | |
| Before you reach Lock 19 there is a large turning area, on to the lock in the distance. | |
| The overflow gully on the right hand side of the lock (Looking up canal). You can see how beautiful and leafy this part of the canal is. Truly amazing. | |
| The long length of the lock 19, anyone for 72 ft'er? |
|
|
|
Leaving lock 19 the canal is once full again and back to its rightful level. Onward to lock 18!. |
Lock 18
| Lock 18 is very similar to the others in this flight. | |
| Lock 18 | |
| Lock 18's gully and mooring post. | |
| 3 more to go! |
